Kled Gaeow Wreck Dive Site
The HTMS Kled Gaeow Wreck was deliberately sank on 19 March 2014 to create an exciting new dive site at the Phi Phi Islands. It is inside the marine protected area of the Had Nopharathara National Park.
The wreck is 47-48 meters in length and sits upright at a depth of 26 meters with its tower at 14 meters depth. The HTMS Kled Gaeow was originally built in Norway before serving the Royal Thai navy as an auxilary transport ship.
It takes 20 minutes to reach there from Phi Phi Don Island.
THE DIVE SITES
This dive is suitable for certified advanced divers, or Open Water divers that are combining a wreck dive package with the PADI Deep Adventure training add-on dive.
Kled Gaeow Wreck Dive
There are usually decent lines at the wreck site which facilitate locating the wreck straight away. We usually descend directly to the sandy bottom at 26 meters (+-3 mts). The underside of the wreck attracts groupers, porcupine fish, emperors, sweepers and the occasional bamboo shark sleeping under the hull.
There are two large ballast tanks that were used in the sinking of the wreck still attached on both sides, and these are a good reference point as they are pretty much at the middle of the wreck.
As we ascend to the main deck at 20 meters look up and you will be astounded by schools of yellow snappers and fusiliers which sometimes make it hard to see the wreck due to the density of the schools.
The main deck has a large loading bay and entering into the bay would find yourself where the engine used to be. There are also two lower front storage compartments. Wreck penetration is only permitted for divers that have the appropriate wreck diver certifications and whether the appropriate wreck lines have been arranged for the dive.
At the front of the main top deck there are the left and right access doors to a single storage area. A service hatch in the ceiling of the storage area is accessible and visible from the exterior.
Also on the main deck there are two narrow gangways on the sides of the main turret. Once upon time it would have been possible to swim along there, but the amount of molluscs and coral growth plus the abundance of lionfish that float in these would make swimming through these corridors very risky.
To the aft of the vessel is the rear deck at around 18 meters and the remnants of a gun turret still exists.
Since the dive is considered a deep dive and bottom time is limited we ascend as we circle the turret, the top oif which is at 14 meters. Trevally, barracudas and mackerel can be seen here hunting the schools of fish. Other common animals to see here are nudibranchs and scorpionfish.
A dive here finishes with a safety stop on the mooring line.
