DIVEMASTER VS DIVEMASTER INTERNSHIP

Whether you go for the Standard option or the Internship option, both programs cover all of the necessary criteria to complete the PADI Divemaster training (see below).

The Divemaster program means that you will complete the course in roughly 3-6 weeks to ensure that all the required Dovemaster training  has been completed.

The Divemaster Internship program is for students that wish to take the training to the next level and fully understand the daily workings of a busy dive center. The internship will mean a 90 day addition to the training time where candidates develop skills as part of The Adventure Club Team and are subject to all aspects of the daily running’s of the dive center and operations.

  • During the boat trips we shall provide refreshments, fruit, water, tea, and coffee. Between the two dives there is a short break to enjoy the beautiful bays, during which we provide a delicious buffet of Thai cuisine. Who can enrol in a PADI Divemaster course?

To start the PADI Divemaster course candidates are required to:

  • Be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent
  • Be a minimum of 18 year age
  • Have 40 logged dives to start course
  • Complete EFR Primary & Secondary Care training or other recognized First Aid course within 2 years
  • A medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months

Divemaster Orientation

As a PADI Divemaster you will learn to appreciate that proper preparation and organization is paramount to performing your duties in a professional manner.

And a proper orientation for Divemaster candidates for our PADI Divemaster course ahead of the course ensures that candidates have a full understanding of what will be required. Preparation should start before candidates even arrive so send us an email to get a personalized plan for your course.

The orientation will include:

  • Introduction to the course breakdown and itinerary
  • Assistance with arranging accommodation and budgeting during the course duration
  • Preparation for the Divemaster Knowledge Development

Divemaster Knowledge Development

Divemaster candidates will need to complete 9 knowledge development segments, including Knowledge Reviews in the PADI Divemaster Manual. This can be done by:

  • Online E-learning
  • In class presentations
  • Independent Study

Upon completing the Knowledge Development the Instructor (aka mentor) will review and discuss each of the segments to ensure the candidates have a full understanding of the material.

This is all in preparation for the PADI Divemaster final exam for which the passing score is 75%.

Emergency Assistance Plan

Part of the course curriculum is to present an Emergency Assistance Plan. This plan is specific for the use at the local dive sites. Your mentor will provide you with assistance on how to obtain information that should be included in this plan.

Divemaster Course Waterskills Development

Candidates are required to complete five waterskills exercises.

Exercise 1: 400 Metre / Yard Swim

  • Swim 400 meters/ yards without swimming aids and using any stroke or combination of strokes

Exercise 2: 15-Minute Tread

  • Tread water, drown-proof, or float using no aids and wearing only a swimsuit for 15 minutes, with hands (not arms) out of the water for the last two minutes

Exercise 3: 800 Metre/ Yard Swim

  • Swim 800 metres/yards face down, using mask, snorkel and fins, nonstop, without flotation aids and without using arms to swim.

Exercise 4: 100 Metre/ Yard Inert Diver Tow

  • Tow (or push) a diver for 100 metres/yards nonstop, at the surface, without assistance – both divers equipped in full scuba equipment.

Exercise 5: Equipment Exchange

  • In confined water, demonstrate the ability to effectively respond to an unusual circumstance underwater by exchanging all scuba equipment (except exposure suits and weights) with a buddy while sharing a single regulator second stage earning a minimum score of 3.

Diver Rescue

Respond to an unresponsive, non-breathing diver, including these steps:

  • Enter the water, locate and surface a submerged diver who is about 25 metres/yards away.
  • Turn the diver face up and establish buoyancy.
  • Remove the diver’s mask and regulator, open the airway and check for breathing.
  • Call for help.
  • Give two initial rescue breaths, and continue with an effective rescue breath every five seconds with no or very few interruptions.
  • Tow the diver to safety while protecting the airway, continuing rescue breathing.

Dive Skills Workshop

As a professional certified PADI Divemaster, candidates must be comfortable with and be able to demonstrate all scuba and skin diving skills. During the course Divemaster candidates will have multiple opportunities to accompany the PADI instructor as they conduct different courses such as the PADI Open Water Diver course, and the PADI Advanced Diver course. During which time the candidate will be able to observe the proper techniques for demonstrating dive skills and equal opportunity to practice and perfect each skill.

Note: The objective is to be able to conduct a skill in a manner that will clearly demonstrate the techniques needed to perform the skill correctly to a beginner student.

Practical Application

Skill 1 – Dive Site Setup and Management

Divemaster candidates in buddy teams, or individually set up a dive site and manage the pre-dive preparation, including:

  • Choosing a location appropriate for divers to assemble equipment.
  • Preparing emergency equipment, such as a first-aid kit and oxygen unit.
  • Greeting divers as they arrive at the site/boat and providing direction. For example – where to place equipment, location of nearest facilities, etc.
  • Organizing a dive roster and reviewing check in and check out procedures with divers.
  • Preparing and setting a float/dive flag if diving from shore, or ensuring the descent line and dive flag are ready, as appropriate, when diving from a boat.
  • Choosing an appropriate vantage point from which to monitor the dive.
  • Being accessible to answer diver questions and prepared to assist divers both before and after the dive.

Skill 2 – Mapping Project

Here candidates develop and fine-tune their navigation skills. Divemaster candidates in buddy teams survey an open water dive site and create a detailed map of the site showing (as applicable to the site) underwater relief, important points of interest, any relevant environmental notes, recommended entry/exit areas, local facilities, and potential hazards.

Skill 3 – Dive Briefing

One under-estimated skill is the dive briefing. A proper dive- briefing can make the world of difference between an average dive and a fantastic dive.
Divemaster candidates will be given ample opportunities to practice and conduct dive briefings. The PADI Divemaster Slates will be used to present all 10 points important to an all-round dive briefing.

Skill 4 – Search And Recovery Scenario

Your mentor will set up various search and recovery scenarios that allow Divemaster candidates to complete the following:

  • Demonstrate a methodical search of an area to find a small submerged object.
  • Demonstrate a methodical search of an area to find a submerged object not more than 11 kilograms/25 pounds negatively buoyant.
  • Tie the following knots correctly underwater: the bowline, two half-hitches and a sheet bend.
  • Demonstrate how to safely rig and bring to the surface an object not more than 11 kilograms/25 pounds negatively buoyant using an appropriate lifting device.

Skill 5 – Deep Dive Scenario

Divemaster candidates will conduct a deep dive in which each divemaster candidate completes the following:

  • With a buddy before the dive, prepare emergency breathing equipment, and position it at the safety stop depth.
  • Descend using a reference line, wall or sloping bottom as a visual guide only, while staying with a buddy and controlling the descent rate.
  • Navigate with a compass at least 20 kick cycles away from and back to the reference line or designated spot.
  • Use a depth gauge and timing device, or a dive computer to monitor an ascent rate no faster than 18 metres/ 60 feet per minute while using a reference line, wall or sloping bottom as a visual guide only.
  • Perform a 3-minute safety stop at 5 metres/15 feet before surfacing without holding on to a reference line for positioning.

Divemaster-Conducted Programs Workshops

Workshop 1: ReActivate Program

  • Access ReActivate program standards in the PADI Instructor Manual.
  • State ReActivate knowledge assessment options.
  • Demonstrate the prescriptive ReActivate method for determining skills to practice.
  • Recognize and correct problems during skill practice

Workshop 2: Skin Diver Course and Snorkeling Supervision

  • Give the Skin Diver course briefing or a snorkeling tour briefing.
  • Conduct a Skin Diver course confined water or open water dive; or lead a snorkel tour, demonstrating control and supervision.
  • Recognize and correct problems during the skin dive or snorkel tour.

Workshop 3: Discover Scuba Diving Program in Confined Water

  • Access Discover Scuba Diving program standards in the PADI Instructor Manual, and explain a Divemaster’s role as an assistant during a confined water experience.
  • Locate the Discover Scuba Diving Leader Internship Requirements in the PADI Instructor Manual, and explain how a Divemaster qualifies as a Discover Scuba Diving Leader.
  • Demonstrate proper positioning relative to the participants as directed by the instructor.
  • Recognize and correct problems during the experience.

Workshop 4: Discover Scuba Diving Program — Additional Open Water Dive

  • State the ratio and supervision requirements for an additional dive (subsequent to an initial dive with an instructor) for Discover Scuba Diving participants conducted by a PADI Divemaster.
  • Give a dive briefing appropriate for Discover Scuba Diving participants for an additional open water dive.
  • Lead the dive, demonstrating proper control and required supervision.
  • Recognize and correct problems during the dive.

Workshop 5: Discover Local Diving in Open Water

  • Access Discover Local Diving program standards in the PADI Instructor Manual.
  • Assess dive site conditions, and plan the dive.
  • Give a Discover Local Diving briefing.
  • Lead a dive, demonstrating control and supervision.
  • Recognize and correct problems during the dive.
  • Demonstrate how to deploy a surface marker.

Practical Assessment

Practical Assessment 1 – Open water Diver Students in Confined Water

  1. Organize pre-dive equipment setup by student divers.
  2. Coordinate student diver flow during training.
  3. Supervise student divers not receiving the immediate attention of the instructor during training.
  4. Help a student diver overcome a learning difficulty.
  5. Respond to, or prevent, student diver problems as they occur.
  6. Demonstrate a skill for student divers.

Practical Assessment 2 – Open water Diver Students in Open Water

  1. Assess an open water training site; report to the instructor recommendations as to site suitability for training entry-level divers.
  2. Organize pre-dive equipment setup by student divers.
  3. Assist in the preparation of the site.
  4. Coordinate student diver flow during training.
  5. Supervise student divers not receiving the immediate attention of the instructor during training.
  6. Respond to, or prevent, student diver problems as they occur.
  7. Lead student divers on an underwater tour (ratio 2:1).

Practical Assessment 3 – Continuing Education Students in Open Water

  1. Coordinate student diver flow during training.
  2. Escort continuing education student divers during a training dive that allows indirect instructor supervision; report performance and learning difficulties to instructor.
  3. Help a continuing education student diver overcome a learning difficulty.
  4. Respond to, or prevent, student diver problems as they occur.

Practical Assessment 4 — Certified Divers in Open Water

  1. Conduct environmental and diver assessments, taking appropriate supervisory steps based on the assessments.
  2. Give a pre-dive briefing appropriate to the dive site.
  3. Account for buddy teams entering and leaving the water.
  4. Respond to, or prevent diver problems appropriately.

Practical Assessment

Divemaster candidates will also need to score at least a 3 in each category below by the end of Practical Application.

  1. Level of active, positive participation in the training sessions
  2. Ability to serve as a mentor to student divers
  3. Willingness to follow directions
  4. Positive attitude and demeanor toward student divers, certified divers and staff

Excellent Dive Shop

Excellent staff and great service! I enjoyed diving with the Adventure Club–they focus on safety which I greatly appreciate. They have two boats they use to take divers out to dive sites, depending on the group size and weather conditions. I highly recommend this dive shop if you want to dive in Phi Phi.

Amazing

I can truly recommend The Adventure Club. We were two families with young children getting different levels of certification as well as leisure dives, snorkeling and kayaking. The guys were fantastic with the kids when certifying and teaching to dive. Very professional. Owner Tero is also the perfect Phi Phi Island guide for activities, restaurants and places to stay.

Truly outstanding experience, as a total novice wanting to try and learn…..I had no idea of the skills and challenge this would represent. So, so glad that I went with these guy’s…..! Totally professional, super experienced and just a perfect fit to introduce me to this world. Out dedicated instructor (Josh) really made it possible, calming, encouraging, knowledgeable and inspiring for sure…..

Covid – no Problem

I just finished a 2 Day, 4 dive package with the Adventure Club. They are still operating and offering excellent personalized service. The diving conditions were excellent with visibility 15-20 meters.
Top notch outfit. I wound definitely use them again

With limited experience under my wings (9 logged dives), i was NOT a confident diver. After extensive research (i am fussy), I chose this place to do AOW. So glad I did! Basing in koh Phi Phi, the dive sites are nearby. Their boat is clean & comfy with 2 toilets. Helpful and friendly staffs both at the shop & on the boat….

Sunset snorkel cruise

My group of friends and I did the sunset snorkel cruise with a night snorkel to see the bio-luminescent plankton and had a great time! Our guide was great, she had many years of diving and scuba under her belt and had tons of cool facts and info to share with us along the way.…

This is the third time we dive with The Adventure Club at phi phi. This time we had 7 great dives. 2 discover scuba (Freja at 12 years) 1 bubblemaker (Sofie, 9 years) and I had 4 fun dives. The Adventure Club is very professionel, great gear, great boat, great instructors. We dived with Olli, their instructor from Finland…. simply perfect.

We have had the pleasure of diving with this company both trips we have been on to Phi Phi. Excellent instructors, super friendly staff, great pricing and amazing dive boat.

We also brought our own gear which is taken back to the shop every night and washed for us, then put back on the boat for our next day of diving… what more could you ask for.

Shark Tour

We went on a Shark Watch tour and let me say, it was unbelievable. There was so many marine life and our guide Valentino was so nice and knowledgeable. I can’t wait to come back and have Valentino as our guide. You have to take this tour if you are in the Phi Phi islands.
